110 players from 20 countries vie for the championship Cup
Dubai, UAE (November 30, 2015) – Dubai Chess and Culture Club today hosts the 44th UAE National Day Rapid Chess Championship with close to 110 players from 20 countries vying for the top prizes. The three-day tournament, hosted by the club every year to celebrate the founding anniversary of the UAE, features a competitive field with the title holders of the three previous editions taking part, led by defending champion Grandmaster (GM) Elmar Magerramov of Azerbaijan.
Magerramov, head coach of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, will be joined by Emirati GM and Asian Champion Salem A.R. In addition, UAE national team coach GM Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands, who ruled last week’s UAE National Sports Day Tournament hosted by the club, joins the early favourites along with GM Grivas Efstratios of Greece and GM Walter Arencibia of Cuba.
More than 40 players from different Emirati clubs are taking part in the event, accounting for the bulk of participation in the nine-round Swiss system tournament. India and the Philippines sent the second and third-largest delegations. The Arab region is also well represented with players from Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen, as well as participants from the Netherlands, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Spain, Cuba and Greece.
The tournament offers AED 22,000 in total cash prize with the champion receiving AED 5,000 along with the champion’s cup. There will also be awards for the best-performing UAE players as well as top Dubai players.
Tournament allots a thinking of a time of 15 minutes plus three seconds per move for each player. Emirati International Arbiters (IA) Mahdi Abdul Rahim and Saeed Yousef Shukri serve as chief arbiter and deputy chief arbiter respectively, assisted by IAs Mohamed Abdulla, Jamal Qasim and Augusto Marcial.
